In today’s class before going on to Communicative Language Teaching, Gnawali sir briefly explained about the silent way and total physical response. Both of these methods are rarely used by themselves in a classroom but they may be used as a subsidiary method. Gnawali sir couldn’t give much example on silent way as he didn’t have the Cuisenaire rods which are very essential to this method. Then he talked about Total Physical Response which was first proposed by James Asher. It is a method which works with co-ordination of action and speech. It draws from Krashen’s comprehensible input.

Then Gnawali sir began discussion on Communicative Language Teaching by talking on receptive and productive skills, learner-centeredness, authentic communication, accuracy vs fluency and form and function. We mainly learnt that an activity becomes communicative when:

• There is a need to communicate
• There is a desire to communicate
• There is real/authentic use of language
• The participants contribute spontaneously

In this method learners are negotiator, participant and speaker or listener, while teachers act as facilitator, participant, organizer, guide, initiator, researcher, needs analyst, group processor and counsellor.
