Unfortunately today also I was absent for the class. It is my second time and I really don’t want it to happen again. So I really hope that my health will be on my side for this. Even though I was absent I got some pointers from the hands out that Gnawali sir gave. In today’s class he taught about teaching reading for which he took a sample paper for example i.e. learning to behave. According to him there are various purposes of reading which are reading for gist, language studies, information, pleasure, pronunciation, broadcasting, publicizing, performing rites, etc. He also defined the types of reading which were scanning, skimming, reading through, faster reading, silent reading, reading aloud, extensive reading and intensive reading. From the definitions given I found that I mostly do fast reading which mostly involves scanning and skimming. I also prefer silent reading to reading aloud. Then he taught about stages of teaching reading which were pre-reading, while reading and post reading. These stages are further divided into setting scene, prediction, pre-teach vocabulary, set extensive task, read, discuss answers, class feedback, set intensive task, read, discuss answers, class feedback and set text activity. After that he talked about the approaches to reading which are top-down and bottom-up. In today’s class he used top-down method in which he started from real world and ended at words level.
