FIRST CLASS OF ADVANCED ELT

FIRST CLASS OF ADVANCED ELT

Today was the much awaited class by Gnawali sir. After the very fruitful course with him in first semester I was looking forward to having him share his knowledge in other subjects too. As he introduced our course, he said that as we had already learnt this subject in Bachelors, this course is going to be the advance form of that course. He reminded us that in this class we were not only going to learn through what he taught but also according to how he taught. For example in our classes we could use whatever activities he did in our class. In today’s warm-up he asked some personal questions and we had to either sit or stand according to the question being asked. If the answer is true we would have to stand and if the answer is not true then we would have to sit. In my case I had to stand when he asked about the people who had been to China and who knows how to communicate in more than three languages.

He referred us to buy some books too. We were going to study from these books about different theories related to English language teaching. The books were Approaches and methods in language teaching by Richard and Rogers and Techniques and principles in language teaching by Larsen-Freeman and Anderson. Luckily I found the pdf versions of both which will be very easy to study with my kindle. He also said that we had to buy English books of grade 8-10.

He then asked us to make metaphors related to the classroom, teacher, students and T/L materials. In my case I symbolized the given set as being galaxy, stars. Planets and space respectively. He gave us an assignment to make the symbolization in a chart paper. I really hope I can finish this in time though.

Towards the end of the class he said to us about a research conducted in Nepal and Thailand. And the research showed that in comparison to other countries Nepalese still depend on the teachers for most of the guiding while in other countries people have become more learner centered.
