Today I was very late to the class. I was late because I had to take my wife to the hospital to see her sister who had recently given birth to a cute son. I guess I missed a lot of things as Dhanapati sir had already begun a new topic. When I entered the class, he was giving some handouts for class assignment. According to the assignment we had to arrange the given sentences in logical order. It didn’t seem so hard but none of us in the class got it right in our first try. But luckily I was able to get it correct the second time. I was definitely flattered by the praises given by Dhanapati sir on the assignment but later I felt like it would have been easier in my concise if I did not do so. Mainly because somehow it led to bitterness in the class. But all is well that ends well. So I guess these kinds of things keep on happening.

In case of the class, Dhanapati sir reiterated that we have not really begun the course on discourse analysis and that we are just laying the foundation for the main classes so that we won’t have any confusion in classes later on in the semester. From the class I learnt that in discourse there are text forming devices which keep the sentences in a text related to each other. And that is what establishes cohesion and coherence in the text. And it is due to the cohesive ties that we are able to make sense out of any kind of discourse.

From the class I also learnt that discourse can be defined as a stretch of language consisting of several sentences which are perceived to be related in some way. We can understand people through it. Like if a person sleeps a lot, he is sad and if a person speaks less but fast then he keeps secrets and if someone becomes angry over silly or petty things then it means s/he needs love.
