Although Gnawali sir commented on me saying “Are you feeling sleepy? Why are you yawning” I didn’t

Although Gnawali sir commented on me saying “Are you feeling sleepy? Why are you yawning” I didn’t feel sleepy at all for the rest of the class as there was going to be a lot of group work especially focusing on poems. But first he checked the assignment that he gave last week. And as usual all had done the assignment even if it was out of compulsion. Today Gnawali sir specifically told to write the reflection by mentioning the activities and to write how we felt about it.

Then the first task we were given was to write a crazy story. We had to write part of the story but we couldn’t see what the others were writing. In the end everybody had a crazy story of their own. My crazy story is as following:

Hari met Laxmi at home. He said,” Your clothes are very dirty. ” She said, “Thank you”. And they fought with each other.

Then from folding crazy story we went to folding poetry. In this task we were all given a paper each and we had to write a single line of poem by referring to the previous line only. We couldn’t see the other parts of the poem. I just tried to rhyme my lines as close as possible to the ones before. The poem that I ended up at the end is as following:

You and me

Holding you lightly under my arms,

Lying under the moon with future plans,

Flying in the blue sky face calm,

Always go up not the down,

Being smile and smile,

You would certainly win the world,

And also win the power of all,

So let’s make a call.

In the third task we were divided into groups of 5 each and we were to contribute 5 words each in the middle. Then we took out 9 words that seemed unnecessary. Then Gnawali sir told us to arrange the words in 4*4 order. Then he told us to write a stanza of poem from it. It was quite difficult to write a meaningful poem but somehow we managed the following stanza:

This struggle of my life prisoned me with difficulties,

Dream of beautiful democracy and freedom brings happiness,

Amazing hiking in the underwater zoo,

That’s all there is to life, I just love eating food.

In the last task we were supposed to write and acrostic poem, which was very fun to write. And some of my friends really wrote good poems. My acrostic poem are as followed:

MOTHER

Moving her hands

On my head

This feels like

Heaven

Even gives us bread

Rise up slowly she said

BIBEK

Brave

In heart

Brave

Each time

Kindles bravely

At the end he reminded us to complete the first assignment concerning critique on CLT and TPR. Then he gave us another report to write on an issue of ELT for which I chose to write on something related to internet’s use in language classroom. He also taught how to section break in word.

Unfortunately today also I was absent for the class. It is my second time and I really don’t want it

Unfortunately today also I was absent for the class. It is my second time and I really don’t want it to happen again. So I really hope that my health will be on my side for this. Even though I was absent I got some pointers from the hands out that Gnawali sir gave. In today’s class he taught about teaching reading for which he took a sample paper for example i.e. learning to behave. According to him there are various purposes of reading which are reading for gist, language studies, information, pleasure, pronunciation, broadcasting, publicizing, performing rites, etc. He also defined the types of reading which were scanning, skimming, reading through, faster reading, silent reading, reading aloud, extensive reading and intensive reading. From the definitions given I found that I mostly do fast reading which mostly involves scanning and skimming. I also prefer silent reading to reading aloud. Then he taught about stages of teaching reading which were pre-reading, while reading and post reading. These stages are further divided into setting scene, prediction, pre-teach vocabulary, set extensive task, read, discuss answers, class feedback, set intensive task, read, discuss answers, class feedback and set text activity. After that he talked about the approaches to reading which are top-down and bottom-up. In today’s class he used top-down method in which he started from real world and ended at words level.

Today I was almost shocked to not see Gnawali sir in the class as he is mostly regular in his classes

Today I was almost shocked to not see Gnawali sir in the class as he is mostly regular in his classes except when he has other works and it seemed that today was one of those days. Our class was taken by Usha Kiran Wagle who started by taking our multiple intelligence test. I found myself being more of a visual learner with audio and kinesthetic also in the mix. She was going to talk on the paper that Gnawali sir had given us to read which was written by N. S. Prabhu (found at http://neltachoutari.pbworks.com/f/There+is+no+best+method.pdf). She pointed out three main points according to the paper which are:

Different methods are best for different teaching contents

All methods are partially true or valid

The notion of good and bad methods is itself misguided.

She talked about most of the methods being created for other conditions than that of Nepal. For e.g. CLT was created for Chinese businessmen who had high motivation; Audio-Lingual was created for Army while suggestopaedia is only for beginning of the class. It is similar to tissue rejection in medical term. For e.g. CLT failed in Pakistan as females are not allowed to speak with males.

Then Mabindra Regmi talked on the topic ‘Contextualizing the textbook content’ which also was the theme of his Master’s thesis. He started with an audio and an incident related to a shopping incident. According to him we have to contextualize because:

It can help learners to understand the function of language.

It can assist learners in developing appropriate use of language

It adds to cultural element combining language and culture

When I got the handout for the day, I knew that it was going to be something related to task. And as

When I got the handout for the day, I knew that it was going to be something related to task. And as I assumed, similar events happened in the class. First we were made to do a role play that was titled noisy neighbor. We were divided into pairs and one of the person will be a noisy neighbor and other one has to comment on that politely and get an apology. I was paired with Santona and had to convince her that the noise that came from her party was too much and should not happen again. Naturally I could not go with the flow as I am not that kind of person who unnecessarily presses an issue on a person. Due to which instead of being an argument, the conversation was too polite with both of us taking our time and letting the other one speaking freely. But anyways it was fun, especially for others for whom the natural setting worked perfectly.

After that we were again divided into three groups of three person each. Our task was to complete an incomplete story given by the teacher and draw it in a chart paper. I was grouped with Pabitra and Santona. I first asked what kind of ending they wanted to which we agreed on a happy ending. Then began a roller coaster of ideas coming in which were so funny that we were laughing continuously and Pabitra almost lost her balance while laughing with her face totally red and blushing. At the end of it most of our jaws were paining. We finally decided to have a story with suspense. In which, a childless couple go to a beach house for holiday. When they are at the beach, the girl says that she will come back after swimming but doesn’t return for a long time. The next morning, the boy finds a letter by the door which says that the girl to sorry and not coming back again. The boy follows the trail and searches the whole beach. By the end of the day when he returns he finds himself shocked that his wife is wishing him a Happy April fool’s day. And that seems like a happy ending in comparison to other two groups in which the girl instead elopes with another person for either money or a baby.

Then coming to the theoretical part, Gnawali sir explained that the first thing we did was an activity because it didn’t have a visible product but the second thing we did was a task because it had a visible product in the form of the drawing. At the end we were given an assignment to write at least half page on any English textbook if its unit was task based or not.

In today’s class before going on to Communicative Language Teaching, Gnawali sir briefly explained

In today’s class before going on to Communicative Language Teaching, Gnawali sir briefly explained about the silent way and total physical response. Both of these methods are rarely used by themselves in a classroom but they may be used as a subsidiary method. Gnawali sir couldn’t give much example on silent way as he didn’t have the Cuisenaire rods which are very essential to this method. Then he talked about Total Physical Response which was first proposed by James Asher. It is a method which works with co-ordination of action and speech. It draws from Krashen’s comprehensible input.

Then Gnawali sir began discussion on Communicative Language Teaching by talking on receptive and productive skills, learner-centeredness, authentic communication, accuracy vs fluency and form and function. We mainly learnt that an activity becomes communicative when:

There is a need to communicate

There is a desire to communicate

There is real/authentic use of language

The participants contribute spontaneously

In this method learners are negotiator, participant and speaker or listener, while teachers act as facilitator, participant, organizer, guide, initiator, researcher, needs analyst, group processor and counsellor.

Unfortunately I had to be absent today due to personal matters. But I guess I could write a reflection

Unfortunately I had to be absent today due to personal matters. But I guess I could write a reflection based on the presentation paper I got and my friends. In today’s class Gnawali sir taught about Suggestopaedia and Natural Approach. To talk about Suggestopaedia, it is an affective humanistic approach to dealing with language. It says that learning best takes place through para-conscious input. According to it learning takes place when desuggestation and suggestion takes place alternatively. Desuggestation is unloading the memory banks of unwanted or blocking memories while suggestion is loading the memory banks of desired and facilitating memories. Its objectives are:

Advanced conversational proficiency

Memorization of vocabulary pairs

Understanding and creating solutions of problems

Natural approach is based on the naturalistic principles of SLA. It is often confused with natural method, which is similar to direct method. There is an emphasis on exposure or input rather than practice and optimizing emotional preparedness.

Today Gnawali sir started with a drill exercise. And it was obvious that he was going to teach about grammar translation method and direct method. He already had us read the related chapters beforehand. At first he gave us some brief history on language teaching methods. According to which Latin was taught in grammar schools through rote learning of grammar, translation, practice of writing sample sentences along with parallel texts and dialogues which later advanced to advanced grammar and rhetoric. By the 19th century, Grammar Translation method was established as standard way of teaching a foreign language. Its characteristics were:

The goal of learning a foreign language is in order to read its literature or for intellectual development.

The first language is maintained as the reference system in the acquisition of the second language

Then he taught us about direct method according to whose principles are:

Language is primarily speech

Classroom objects help learners understand the meanings

No native language used

Pronunciation stressed

Self correction

Conversation activity in each class

Grammar taught inductively

Syllabus based on situation and not on linguistic structure.

Today was the much awaited class by Gnawali sir. After the very fruitful course with him in first semester

Today was the much awaited class by Gnawali sir. After the very fruitful course with him in first semester I was looking forward to having him share his knowledge in other subjects too. As he introduced our course, he said that as we had already learnt this subject in Bachelors, this course is going to be the advance form of that course. He reminded us that in this class we were not only going to learn through what he taught but also according to how he taught. For example in our classes we could use whatever activities he did in our class. In today’s warm-up he asked some personal questions and we had to either sit or stand according to the question being asked. If the answer is true we would have to stand and if the answer is not true then we would have to sit. In my case I had to stand when he asked about the people who had been to China and who knows how to communicate in more than three languages.

He referred us to buy some books too. We were going to study from these books about different theories related to English language teaching. The books were Approaches and methods in language teaching by Richard and Rogers and Techniques and principles in language teaching by Larsen-Freeman and Anderson. Luckily I found the pdf versions of both which will be very easy to study with my kindle. He also said that we had to buy English books of grade 8-10.

He then asked us to make metaphors related to the classroom, teacher, students and T/L materials. In my case I symbolized the given set as being galaxy, stars. Planets and space respectively. He gave us an assignment to make the symbolization in a chart paper. I really hope I can finish this in time though.

Towards the end of the class he said to us about a research conducted in Nepal and Thailand. And the research showed that in comparison to other countries Nepalese still depend on the teachers for most of the guiding while in other countries people have become more learner centered.
